RHINOCYTE, INC.

Incorporated:    May 2005

Contacts:    Fred Roisen, Ph.D., Founder and President

Description:    RHINOCYTE, INC.Founded in 2005 by UofL scientist Dr. Fred Roisen, RhinoCyte is developing diagnostic tools and therapies for the stem cell treatment of multiple degenerative and traumatic neurological diseases. Potential application of this technology includes therapeutic stem cell transplantation with cells from the patient's own nasal cavity, eliminating the need for immunosuppressive therapy. This process could eventually be used to treat conditions such as Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS and spinal cord injuries.

RhinoCyte will initially focus its efforts on the treatment of subacute spinal cord injury. SCI affects more than 250,000 patients in the U.S. alone, with 13,000 new cases annually. According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, annual total costs for spinal cord injuries exceed $20 Billion.

Through its partnership with MetaCyte, RhinoCyte has successfully completed a round of significant seed funding, held an initial pre-IND meeting, received orphan drug designation for SCI, and is raising a $10-12 million Series B financing round. RhinoCyte expects to progress to independent facility and operational laboratory space in early 2009.
