EndoProtech's technology facilitates the rapid targeted delivery and long term display of clinically relevant bio-therapeutics on the surface of the vascular endothelium, permitting close monitoring and protection of vascular surfaces. EndoProtech is developing and commercializing unique therapies which have application in the fields of organ transplantation and invasive cardiovascular surgery.
Ischemia Reperfusion Injury (IRI) associated with organ transplant and numerous cardiovascular procedures initiates a cataclysmic cascade which compromises the function and integrity of the vascular endothelium; a significant contributor to graft dysfunction, low cardiac output syndrome and overall peri and post-operative morbidity and mortality. There are no accepted therapies for IRI; EndoProtech is leveraging its platform technology to develop effective targeted modalities to address this unmet medical need.
In 2006 over 28,000 organ transplants were completed, with additional 98,000 individuals awaiting transplant. First-year costs associated with solid organ transplants totaled more than $9 billion; more than half of this amount was attributed to post-transplant care costs.
According to a 2005 American Heart Association update over 600,000 coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedures are performed annually. The U.S. revenue potential for a treatment directed at preventing post-CABG complication is significant. For example, a reduction of one post-op cardiac care unit day from hospitalization of patients undergoing CABG would result in an overall savings of $1.2 billion.
